The Bruins continue to load up on cheap veterans, this time on the blue line. Boston announced Saturday afternoon that it has signed 34-year-old defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk. The deal is reportedly for one year and $1 million.

Shattenkirk, a former captain at Boston University, spent the last three seasons with the Anaheim Ducks, where he continued to put up decent point totals (27 last season) and analytics despite playing on a bad team.

Shattenkirk won a Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and has also spent time with the Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis Blues, Washington Capitals and New York Rangers during his 13-year career.

Shattenkirk likely serves as the replacement for Connor Clifton on the right side of Boston's defense, as Clifton signed a three-year, $10 million with the Buffalo Sabres earlier Saturday.

That could potentially take away an NHL opportunity for newcomers Ian Mitchell, Alec Regula and Reilly Walsh, three right-shot defensemen acquired this week. However, none of those three are proven at the NHL level anyways.

Shattenkirk joins forwards Milan Lucic, James van Riemsdyk, Morgan Geekie and Patrick Brown as free-agent signings the Bruins made Saturday.
