Derrick White has emerged as an invaluable piece to the Celtics since being traded to the organization in February 2022. With White set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2025, the Celtics are looking to lock up their All-Defensive guard.
According to Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe, the Celtics and White have had talks regarding a potential extension. Himmelsbach adds despite the ongoing discussions, nothing appears to be on the immediate horizon.
White has two years remaining on the four-year, $70 million contract he signed with the San Antonio Spurs prior to being traded to Boston. The Celtics traded their 2022 first-round pick, a 2028 first-round pick swap, and two players to the Spurs to acquire White at the 2022 trade deadline.
White and the Celtics have until 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 23 to agree to a deal. If an agreement is not reached by the deadline, White will again become eligible to extend this coming offseason. The 29-year-old would be able to extend through June 30, 2025.

White discussed the ongoing negotiations on Tuesday. “I love it here. It’s been great being here, being a Celtic,” the 6-foot-4 guard said. “That’ll never change whether I sign before the season or not. If it happens, great, if not, I’m still excited for the season to be here.”
While Boston could wait until next offseason to extend White, his price tag could significantly increase if he continues to deliver in the way he has.
