Is Game 1 a must-win for the Celtics?
After the Celtics closed out their Game 7 victory over the 76ers on Sunday, Boston coach Joe Mazzulla showed up to his postgame press conference wearing a sweatshirt that read, “Whose car we gonna take?”
If you’re a fan of Boston movies, you know where that quote is from: “The Town.” It’s one of the most famous scenes in the 2010 Ben Affleck-directed film. Affleck’s character tells Jeremy Renner’s character, “I need your help, I can’t tell you what it is, you can never ask me about it later, and we’re gonna hurt some people.”
Renner’s character responds only with that one question.
And if you know Mazzulla a little bit, you’re not surprised at all to see him wearing a sweatshirt with a quote from “The Town” on it. Mazzulla told NBC Sports Boston earlier this season that he’s obsessed with the movie and watches it four times a week.
“It’s just a mindset, a Boston mindset,” he told Brian Scalabrine.
As it turns out, Mazzulla isn’t the only one embracing that mindset. Celtics guard Malcolm Brogdon said on Tuesday that the team has talked about that quote in particular, and it seems it’s become something of a team motto.
“It’s something we’ve talked about, it’s definitely something we’ve talked about,” Brogdon told NESN.com. “…It’s basically just ride or die for your guys, the guys you’re on the court with, the guys you’re competing with. It’s having the mentality it doesn’t matter what we’re going to get into, we’re going to do it together.”
It's a good mindset to have, but – at the risk of spoiling a 13-year-old movie – they better hope for a better ending than the one Renner’s character meets.
