gresh and fauria: Former NFL GM Rick Spielman on evaluating this year's quarterback draft class
We now know it wasn't only the Atlanta Falcons who considered Bill Belichick for their head coaching job.
According to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, the Commanders both spoke with and considered Belichick for their head coaching job before ultimately hiring Dan Quinn on Thursday. The former Patriots head coach reportedly, "had support from some decision makers" in Washington.
As mentioned above, the Atlanta Falcons also spoke with Belichick about their head coaching vacancy, interviewing him twice before hiring Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris last Thursday.
It had been floated by Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio since November that the Commanders and owner Josh Harris would have interest in hiring Belichick should New England move on from him, but Russini's tweet is the first hard reporting of the two sides speaking. In the end, it didn't happen and Belichick doesn't currently hold one of the 32 head coaching jobs in the NFL.
Should this hold true, which it should barring unforeseen circumstances, the 2024-25 season will be the first without the 72-year-old in it since 1975.
Notably, Mike Vrabel and Pete Carroll were also passed up in this coaching cycle.
