jones and mego: patriots qb bailey zappe joins the show
Bailey Zappe will be the Patriots starting quarterback for, at a minimum, one more game as offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien told reporters that the signal caller will get the nod for Sunday’s contest against the Jets.
Beyond that? What New England does at quarterback will very much be a mystery. Whether they win or lose this weekend, there’s a 99.9% chance (according to ESPN PFI) that they land in the top-five of the 2024 NFL Draft, putting them in prime position to select someone else to put under center.
On Tuesday's edition of WEEI’s Jones and Mego with Arcand, Zappe was asked how he’d feel if the Patriots did, in fact, select a quarterback in the first round next April:
"If that's what they decide to do, that's what they decide to do,” he explained. “I'm looking forward to competing against whoever comes in here for that job. I'm going to do the same thing I did last offseason: Get ready to be the guy and if my name's called I'm going to do the best thing I can to help the team win."
Zappe, of course, will have to limit his turnovers if he wants to remain New England’s starter. He threw three interceptions in the first half against Buffalo last Sunday.
“I think just, speaking for myself, it’s just being smarter with the ball,” the quarterback said when asked how he can limit turnovers. “Understanding what the play is, understanding what we’re trying to attack, understanding what the defense is doing against us on that certain play and just getting it to the guys.”
“We have great playmakers,” Zappe continued. “We have guys in the receiver room, right end room, running back room what can do great things with the ball in their hand. So the moment I can get the ball in their hands, the faster I can, the faster they can make plays so I just have got to do a better job of that.”
Zappe also spoke about Sunday potentially being Bill Belichick’s last game, tackle Trent Brown being a healthy scratch, and more on Tuesday’s edition of Jones and Mego. You can listen to the full interview here.
