Jones and Mego: Mac jones says tom brady has been a 'mentor' to him

When Patriots quarterback Mac Jones takes the field at Gillette Stadium on Sunday afternoon, it won’t be the first time he does so with Tom Brady in the building. The third-year signal caller was also at the helm for New England when the GOAT returned the first time, a 19-17 Buccaneers win.

Donning the pressure of having to fill the shoes of the greatest player in NFL history, Jones has nothing but admiration for Brady - something he explained to WEEI’s Jones and Mego on Tuesday afternoon:

“He’s definitely a legend,” Mac said ahead of this weekend’s ‘Thank You, Tom’ game in Foxborough. “I have all the respect for him, he’s a great guy. He’s actually helped me a lot already just talking to him... He’s been a great mentor and stuff. He’s a great player. Love watching his film. He pops up on game tape, obviously, from last year and everything too. He’s always on the film doing the right thing so just trying to learn from him. He’s been awesome.”

A mentor, you say?

“Yeah I think, whether it was Hoyer that was here, whoever, you meet a lot of people that have known him and everything, the stories... so that always helps,” Jones said when asked to go further into his relationship with Brady. “Just being able to learn from that. He’s always on the film like I said so just watching the footwork, the timing, his operation of everything. So he’s definitely the greatest to do it, and that’s why you want to watch him and learn.”

New England's quarterback, like usual, isn’t focused on anything outside of facing who he’s on the field with. Here’s what Jones said about what he learned as a rookie when playing with a guy like Brady on the other sideline:

“I’ve always said you’re not really going against the other quarterback,” he explained. “You’re actually going against the other defense so at the end of the day we’re never on the field at the same time, but you have to respect who’s on the other side of the ball and really just play your game and take the emotion out of it and go out there and just try and do your thing.”

Jones also spoke about facing off against the Eagles defense, if he has a say in the Patriots’ personnel decisions, and more on Tuesday’s edition of Jones and Mego. You can listen to the full interview here.
