The WEEI Producers Show: Time has made some cautiously optimistic about Jerod Mayo
The Patriots’ offensive coordinator search is now up to 9(!!) interviewees.
According to NFL Nerwork’s Tom Pelissero, New England interviewed 49ers tight ends coach Brian Fleury for the position and, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, they also plan to interview former Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy.
Here’s an updated list of candidates:
- Nick Caley (Rams)
- Zac Robinson (Rams)
- Dan Pitcher (Bengals, hired by Bengals)
- Shane Waldron (Seahawks, hired by Bears)
- Jerrod Johnson (Texans)
- Thomas Brown (Panthers)
- Tanner Engstrand (Lions)
- Brian Fleury (49ers)
- Luke Getsy (Bears)
Dan Pitcher was retained by the Bengals and Shane Waldron was hired by the Bears, taking them both out of the running.
As for the new candidates, Brian Fleury has spent the last five years coaching in San Francisco on both sides of the ball. He was a defensive quality control coach in 2019 before joining the offense in 2020. Fleury has coached the 49ers tight ends over the last two seasons and is credited with helping George Kittle earn Second-Team All-Pro honors in 2022. Prior to joining Kyle Shanahan's staff, he worked as a football research analyst and director of football research with the Miami Dolphins.
Luke Getsy spent the last two seasons in Chicago as the Bears offensive coordinator alongside quarterback Justin Fields, but was fired by head coach Matt Eberflus on January 10th who said the "growth and the development of the offense...needed to be better than where it was." Prior to his time in Chicago, Getsy's NFL experience was spent exclusively with the Green Bay Packers serving as an offensive quality control coach (2014-15), wide receivers coach (2016-17), quarterbacks coach (2019-21), and passing game coordinator (2020-21). He's served as the offensive coordinator of Indiana University of Pennsylvania (2011-12) and Mississippi State (2018).
It was also reported on Friday that the Patriots will be bringing in Rams tight ends coach Nick Caley for a second, in-person interview for the position. Caley spent his NFL coaching career in Foxborough before bolting to LA in 2023.
