So this is what it was like for everyone else all those years, hey?
Yes, life on the bottom… or where just about every other team has spent some time this century. Except for the New England Patriots, who regularly dominated everything from the actual games to the postseason, power rankings, and more. Only now, all the bills seem to have come due, and the Patriots are struggling in ways no one could have fathomed for a Bill Belichick-led team.
Sure, people will want to pile on after the Pats dominated so long, not to mention having axes to grind over Belichick’s manner, arrogance, scandals… whatever! The fact is the team is not good now. Actually, they do lead the league in several categories! Just none of the good ones.
As the league enters Week 6 we start to get a feel for who teams really are. And if you look at a quick roundup of the latest power rankings from reputable publications, websites, and football analysts? The feeling is these Patriots stink.
You may feel otherwise, and if so, I recommend you actually watch the games because they are struggling in ways nobody would have ever predicted. And they’re falling further each week, and the football media is having a field day with it. See for yourself.
It's hard to believe they are this low with Bill Belichick as the coach. Maybe it was Tom Brady for all those years.
New England’s minus-76 point differential is the second-worst in the league, and talk of Bill Belichick being pushed out the door suddenly doesn’t seem crazy.
Sports Illustrated - 25th (NB - highest rank you’ll find!)
The Patriots have gone from “You can scheme up Mac Jones” to “My God if anyone gets into that pocket he’s going to throw a pick.”
It's just all terrible for the Patriots right now.
And the worst of all…
The knives are out for a chronic curmudgeon who can’t coach his way out of a growing list of mistakes.
Perhaps things will get better and they’ll claw their way out of the league’s basement. They can’t get much worse…can they?
Stay tuned! But wow, life at the bottom… not what it’s cracked up to be.
