6 rings: Michael Onwenu is on the field as the Patriots wrap up Training Camp practices for 2023
Yes, I am aware it is the last full week in August and the NFL’s opening game for 2023 is in just two weeks.
That being said, let’s take a look at a wayyyy too early 2023 NFL mock draft conducted by ESPN’s Matt Miller.
Obviously, we won’t know the 2024 NFL Draft order until week 17 in January, but for content purposes, ESPN uses their Football Power Index rankings in reverse order. Under these circumstances, the Patriots pick 12th overall.
Their selection? University of Houston tackle Patrick Paul:
“12. New England Patriots - Patrick Paul, OT, Houston
The Patriots have taken a Band-Aid approach at offensive tackle in recent seasons, but considering how great the 2024 class appears, that should come to an end. Paul is an easy mover at left tackle despite a 6-7, 315-pound frame. He's able to pull and work in the screen game, and he still has the strength to absorb bull rushers at the line of scrimmage. I see ideal length, power and agility for a modern left tackle, and while Paul is still an emerging player who must work on his pad height and body lean, his potential is fantastic and could be harnessed in New England as he becomes a fixture on the blindside. Paul gave up just one sack in 2022, and that pass-protecting skill set should help quarterback Mac Jones.”
Paul started all 13 games at left tackle for the Cougars in 2022 and was a team captain as a sophomore, something Bill Belichick would surely admire. He earned first-team All-AAC honors and was the No.2 graded pass blocker among all tackles in the nation by PFF.
The Patriots current offensive tackle group consists of Trent Brown, Riley Reiff, Calvin Anderson, Conor McDermott, and Sidy Sow - and as I’m sure you’ve read on this exact website, they need all of the help they can get.
While it’s obviously way too early to suggest that Patrick Paul is who New England will select in the first round next April, it’s fair to suggest that offensive tackle will be at the top of their list.
