6 rings & football things: reacting to eliot wolf's nfl combine press conference
Though his title of 'director of scouting' has yet to change, Eliot Wolf's responsibilities within the front office have.
Speaking with reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday, Wolf thanked Robert and Jonathan Kraft for the "opportunity that's been bestowed" upon him while also clarifying ownerships role in the offseason, as well as his own, given their amount of salary cap space and draft position with the No. 3 overall pick:
"They prefer to stay out of football," Wolf said of the Kraft's, "But they've been very supportive of Jerod and myself and Matt. Anything we need, we've got -- in a lot of ways. I think they have opinions, which they'll share, but ultimately it's down to Jerod and I."
He also said that in the draft war room, "It's gonna be a collaborative effort. Coach Mayo, myself, Matt Groh, the whole staff. At the end of the day somebody has to make that pick and that'll be myself." It was previously reported that Wolf will have control over the team's personnel department and the 53-man roster.
When asked what the Patriots will do with the No. 3 pick given that they have Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe in the quarterback room, Wolf said that, "there's a lot of options on the table." He later was asked about the traits he looks for in a signal-caller:
"First of all, being someone that can elevate his teammates," he explained. "Someone that your teammates wanna play for. I think that's an extremely underrated thing that people don't really talk about that much. Leadership's important, and obviously-- you know, physical talent. We wouldn't be talking about these guys if they weren't physically talented."
"Body language on the field is very important at that position," Wolf continued when asked about body language as a trait. "You don't want a guy that's throwing his hands up after a bad play or you can see him physically pointing at somebody or-- you know. Body language is important. Everybody's looking to the quarterback."
Wolf also told the media that New England will meet with quarterbacks Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels at the Combine this week.
