Many Islanders fans were up in arms during Monday night’s series opener against the Hurricanes after multiple questionable penalty calls, and Boomer was among that crowd, particularly a slashing call against Ryan Pulock that led to a Hurricanes goal.

“They gave up two power play goals,” Boomer said. “One they got screwed on. If I had a ‘screw the Islanders button,’ I would have pushed it last night. They got a bad penalty called against them and that ended up in their second power play goal.

“It’s not the way you want to go into the playoffs…stay out of the penalty box. There’s so much top talent in the NHL right now. You take a look at some of these players, you realize that’s how you’re gonna end up losing games, on special teams.”

It was an eventual 2-1 loss for New York, spoiling a chance to steal game one on the road. Carolina converted on two of its four power play attempts, grabbing the narrow win despite not converting a 5-on-5 goal. The Islanders may have gotten hosed, but Boomer says New York is still going to make this a very tough series.

“It’s one game,” Boomer said. “It’s a disappointing game for sure, but game two, they’ll be ready. They’ll make some adjustments, and I still think this damn series is gonna go seven.”
