The Islanders have made it a series with their 5-1 win over the Hurricanes on Friday night, getting a much-needed win in their first-ever playoff game at UBS Arena.

The score was tied 1-1 late in the third period, before New York erupted with a late goal barrage that made NHL playoff history.

Kyle Palmieri started the frenzy with a power play goal with just under four minutes to go in the third period, and Matt Martin quickly gave the Isles some breathing room with a goal of his own just 44 seconds later. Scott Mayfield and Anders Lee followed with empty net goals, turning a 1-1 tie into a 5-1 lead in a span of just 2:18, making it the fastest four goals in a playoff game ever.

The previous record, as noted by ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski, was 2:55 by the Canadiens way back in 1944.

Thanks to their historic scoring surge, the Islanders now have a shot to tie the series in game four on Sunday afternoon.
