After 22 NFL games, Boomer Esiason has seen enough.
Boomer wanted to give Zach Wilson the benefit of the doubt, but after watching Thursday night’s disaster, he is ready to say that the former No. 2 overall pick does not belong on an NFL field, and it’s time for the Jets to move on.
“He’s not ready for this,” Boomer said. “He has no awareness in the pocket. Everything a quarterback should bring to a team: belief, life, spirt, confidence - he basically sucks it completely out of the team, and the team looks that way.
“I have now seen the light. I have totally seen the light. I want to be patient and understanding, I want the kid to do well. But he has no business being on an NFL field. He cannot play here. He can’t. The fans have completely turned on him…it is over. It is done.”
While Wilson was booed off the field and eventually benched, the quarterback picked before him in last year’s draft picked apart a stout Jets defense, continuing his rise to where many hoped he could reach as the consensus No. 1 overall pick. Meanwhile, the quarterback the Jets were sold on seemingly months before the draft has only looked worse, and is looking like an all-time bust.
“The disparity between the first overall pick and the second overall pick was on display last night, and it was stark...it’s gonna cost coaches jobs,” Boomer said.
“From the body language to the decision making and the inability to read defenses…all of the attributes he has displayed, don’t warrant him the ability to put the uniform on and go out and play. They had no chance last night, and it started with the first dropback pass when he was sacked and had no idea what was going on.”
