Can the Jets really be dark horse Super Bowl contenders?
Brandon Tierney said during Monday’s Tiki & Tierney Show that he believes the Jets at least matter, and when Joe Benigno joined for his weekly segment…well, for perhaps the first time this fall, he was fully happy, so much so that he was singing some “Dancing in the Streets” for everyone!
And yes, he and BT can dream that the Jets are back on the big game map.
“I’m delirious right now. This team is one of the best young teams in football,” Joe said. “Green Bay stinks, and the Jets did to the Packers yesterday what a better football team should do to an interior football team. This team is one of the best young teams in the game with some elite, All-Pro type players, and this team is on their way.”
Tiki noted that Sunday may have been Quinnen Williams’ coming out party against the Packers’ offensive line, but it’s the young talent around him that has Mr. Benigno more excited.
“Let’s be honest: the last two drafts have been the mother lode for Joe Douglas,” Joe said. “I was down on Joe for the Mekhi Becton/Denzel Mims draft, but I forgive him, because this team is loaded, and what he’s done in the last two years with these young players is incredible.”
The veterans are performing too, with Joe calling out Duane Brown, Corey Davis, Quincy Williams, and CJ Mosley to name a few, and after he praised them all, BT noted how the Jets were some legit QB play away from being dark horse Super Bowl contenders – and that’s when Joe dove into the extreme parity in the league.
“The only teams I can say are legitimately better than the Jets are Philadelphia, Buffalo, and maybe Kansas City – and I’m not sold on the Chiefs, they miss Tyreek Hill in the worst way,” Benigno said. “Dallas is pretty good but let’s see where they are when Dak comes back, and I have to give the Giants credit for being 5-1 – but outside of that, this is a mediocre league!”
And not to look past Denver – who Joe think should be dealt with just like the Packers were, by the way – but the Jets and their fans know that the Patriots, who loom on Halloween weekend, can always bring the party crashing down…and even singin’ Benigno had to acknowledge it.
“I wanna kick their you-know-what, but as long as Bill Belichick is their head coach, they’re a dangerous team,” Joe said of the 3-3 Pats. “Are they a championship-caliber team anymore? No, but look what they’ve done the last two weeks. They shut out a Detroit team scoring 40 points a game, and blew out Cleveland. You have to give them credit. But I’ve never wanted to win a game as badly as I want this one…I mean, I want blood.”
The 4-2 Jets are one behind Buffalo and one ahead of Miami and New England, and Joe thinks it’s for real.
“They’re better than Miami – the Jets kicked their tails already, and I know Tua didn’t play, but the Dolphins are coming back to reality,” Joe said before somewhat mocking Dolphins fans, “and I think there’s only a handful of teams in the AFC who I think are better than the Jets right now, as crazy as it might be to believe.”
Oh, and about that QB play?
“Here’s what I think about Wilson: continue not to make the big mistake. If he throws 18 or 20 passes a game, that means the Jets are winning games,” Benigno said. “But I’d like to see some different play-calling with him, because he has tremendous mobility, and let’s get him out of the pocket more. That’s what I need to see.”
