There’s fear in the Yankees organization that Luis Gil’s season may be over, as manager Aaron Boone said Friday that the right-hander suffered a “significant” arm injury earlier this week.

Gil was seen by team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad earlier Friday, and Boone, speaking to the media after the announcement of the postponement of Friday night's Yankees-White Sox game, would not get into specifics, but his tenor and words seemed to indicate a worst-case scenario.
“They’re still kind of working through opinions and all that, so I don't want to get too far into it, but it's significant,” Boone said.
Gil left his start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday in the fifth inning, taking himself out of the game by pointing to his elbow and signaling “I’m done.”
The righty is the No. 9 prospect in the organization according to MLB and had a 3.07 ERA in 29 1/3 MLB innings last season, but has struggled in 2021. He had a 7.89 ERA with the RailRiders (19 runs in 21 2/3 innings), and allowed four runs in four innings in a spot start against the White Sox last week.
Boone told the media Thursday he believed the injury was “new,” although Gil’s performance this year leads to wonder if whatever happened to his elbow had been building up.
The timing is also tough because the Yankees will now need a spot starter of some sort sometime in the next week, thanks to Friday’s rainout against the White Sox pushing that game into a doubleheader on Sunday. Gil would not have been an option in that case, having pitched Wednesday, but could have been inserted on Monday or Tuesday against Baltimore as a sixth starter to keep everyone else in rotation.
