Gio: Yankee fans should be 'alarmed' at hitting struggles in Houston

The Yankees will almost certainly make upgrades to increase their chances of finally getting back to a World Series, but even if they do, they still may have to go through Houston to get there.

And Gio says that should worry Yankee fans after Thursday’s doubleheader split.

“I know I’m kind of changing my tune on this…and I still believe it really does come down to the postseason with these two teams, but it’s just alarming,” Gio said during Friday’s show.

“The offense, again! [Aaron] Judge hits that home run in the ninth, it’s a bomb, it’s great, but essentially you’re losing that game 7-2. The first game the offense wasn’t there either, and that was a really frustrating way to lose that game.”

The Yankee bats were silenced in Houston during the 2017 ALCS, when any kind of offensive output in games one or two of that series would have likely meant a return to the Fall Classic for the first time since 2009. Then, in 2019, the offense couldn’t do its part in a battle of the bullpens that was slanted in the Yankees’ favor in game six, and those woes have continued in Houston this season.

“It’s the same old story,” Gio said. “This at least gives you a peek into what these two teams are…you can’t tell me that this isn’t alarming. The Yankees could have the greatest regular season they’ve had since 1998, and if they find themselves in that building in the ALCS, you just don’t feel good about them hitting. And there’s no evidence to the contrary.

“Every reference point is them getting suffocated by this team, especially on the road.”
