Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - It was not an opening to the 2024 preseason the Buffalo Bills would've liked to had in a 33-6 loss to the Chicago Bears at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park.
Heading into Saturday's game, Bills head coach Sean McDermott said the starters, including quarterback Josh Allen, were only going to play a quarter of football. For Allen, he played parts of two series of offense, being pulled for Mitchell Trubisky to start the second quarter in the middle of a drive.
While Allen wanted to finish out the drive, he understood why he was taken out of the game when he was.
"The first drive, three-and-out. Now got to get a good first down there, and then that second drive, it was only three plays until I got yanked. A whole lot of effort getting ready to play, and getting those few snaps, but I understand the reasoning behind it," said Allen following Saturday's loss.
This preseason opener was the first time Allen was able to get game reps with Connor McGovern at center. Allen felt the communication was good in the time he was playing.
"Connor and I were communicating well, understood what we were trying to do. And, the offensive line, their main goal, they told me before, is we just want to keep you clean. And they did that," Allen said. "That's what we're happy about."
Up next for the Bills is a trip to Pittsburgh to not just take part in a joint practice with the Steelers, but also play in the second preseason game on Saturday at Acrisure Stadium.
