Orlando, Fla. (WGR 550) - The Buffalo Bills came into the 2024 offseason projected to be more than $40 million over the salary cap.
The team released a number of high-profile names and starters, including safety Jordan Poyer, center Mitch Morse, and cornerback Tre'Davious White.
The Bills also restructured the contracts of quarterback Josh Allen, defense end Von Miler and tight end Dawson Knox, and gave extensions to left tackle Dion Dawkins and cornerback Taron Johnson, allowing them to lower their cap figures even more.
Less than two weeks into free agency and some new players signed to the roster, Bills general manager Brandon Beane says the team is currently somewhere between $6 million and $7 million under the cap, which rose to $255 million per-team this year.
"I've always talked about not trying to just load everything to walk into one year, and we just got a mess that we've got to deal with," Beane told reporters Sunday at the annual league meetings in Orlando.
"Yes, we were glad that the cap got to where it did, but we were still in the high $40s [millions] over that we needed to clear just to get cap compliant into the league year, much less be able to spend. And we still have to hold money for our draft picks, replacement costs, practice squad, all those things. So even as you see where our cap is, we still have to hold some money back."
The Bills will have an additional $10 million in cap space once White's release officially clears the books on June 1.
