Beane: Don't expect a contract extension for James Cook anytime soon

Bills general manager Brandon Beane touched on a variety of topics at the NFL Owners’ Meetings in South Florida

West Palm Beach, Fla. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane told reporters on Sunday he does not expect a contract extension to get done between the team and running back James Cook anytime soon.

While speaking at the annual NFL League Meetings, Beane said the team and Cook’s representatives had discussions earlier in the offseason, but when it was apparent they wouldn’t be able to strike a deal, he turned his attention to other players whose contracts would also be expiring after next season.

The team has since signed defensive end Greg Rousseau, linebacker Terrel Bernard, wide receiver Khalil Shakir and cornerback Christian Benford to new four-year extensions.

Beane reiterated what he said at the NFL Combine in February: Just because a deal doesn’t get done with Cook this offseason, doesn’t mean it can’t after next season.

Beane also touched on several other topics, including the draft capital the Bills own ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, including 10 overall picks, saying he believes they have enough ammunition to move around the board, both up and back.

He also addressed where they stand at the starting cornerback spot opposite Benford, the salary cap, implications of the PED suspensions of newly signed defensive ends Michael Hoecht and Larry Ogunjobi, and much more.
