Pittsford, N.Y. (WGR 550) - Training camp is officially underway at St. John Fisher University in Rochester, as the Buffalo Bills opened their first practice of camp on Wednesday morning.

This season for the Bills will, once again, be filled with higher expectations, even after Buffalo's loss in the AFC Divisional Round this past January against the Cincinnati Bengals. However, the competition in the AFC, especially the division, continues to get more challenging.

LISTEN LIVE TO WGR:

During the offseason, it was announced that defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier was stepping away from the team for the 2023 season. That meant that head coach Sean McDermott was going to step in and take over defensive play-calling duties, which he hasn't done since his defensive coordinator days with the Carolina Panthers.

With the added responsibilities for McDermott ahead of this upcoming season, he is taking a closer look at the film, while also trying to be on the same schedule with his defensive staff.

"It will mean going back into the film more than once," said McDermott while speaking with the media ahead of Wednesday's first practice at St. John Fisher. "More times than not, if all goes well at practice, I need to get out of here and get back on schedule with the defensive staff."

McDermott is excited to be working with the defense this season, and is also grateful to be working alongside members of his staff. He is also doing his research on handling defensive play-calling tasks while also serving as head coach.

"It’s always trying to feel out where you’re most needed, at the end of the day,” McDermott said.
