Orlando, Fla. (WGR 550) - Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott says he still hasn't made a decision yet on whether he or Bobby Babich will be calling defensive plays for the team next season.

"Bobby's done a phenomenal job. He's a go-getter, and that was part of the reason for the hire," said McDermott on Monday with reporters gathered in Orlando, Florida at NFL league meetings. "I'm able to oversee it from a 10,000-foot view, but I'll tell you what, he's off to great start."

Babich was hired as the team's new defensive coordinator earlier this offseason after previously serving as the Bills' defensive backs coach and then linebackers coach.

McDermott called plays last season, but never named a replacement at defensive coordinator after Leslie Frazier stepped away from coaching in 2023.

Babich was one of several candidates for the position, which also included Eric Washington and John Butler. Washington moved on to become the defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, although he will not call plays.

Butler and the team mutually parted ways.

After their departures and the promotion of Babich, several new people were added to the staff, including new cornerbacks coach Jahmile Addae, nickel coach/senior defensive assistant Scott Booker, and assistant defensive line coach Matt Edwards.

Marcus West was promoted to defensive line coach to replace Washington, and Al Holcomb was named linebackers coach, replacing Babich.

"The staff is coming together," McDermott said. "I think we have more new faces on that side of the ball this year, and I like the staff we put together and they're working hard. Now with the draft, they're out on some of these college workouts, and then I thought the collaboration between the coaching staff and the personnel department in free agency was also at a high-level. That's not always the case, especially when you have some new faces in the room."
