Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR 550) - The Buffalo Bills fell short on Sunday to another AFC East rival in a 29-25 loss to the New England Patriots after another slow offensive start.
It has been a very similar story for the Bills over the past three games. The offense can't get off on the right foot, and the defense is tasked with trying to slow down the opposition.
Like last Sunday's prime-time showdown with the New York Giants, this game came down to the final moments of regulation, as the Patriots reached the Buffalo goal line with seconds left on the clock.
This time, however, the Bills were unable to stop a score, as Patriots quarterback Mac Jones connected with tight end Mike Gesicki to seal the Bills' fate with 12 seconds on the clock.
Following Sunday's loss, Bills head coach Sean McDermott was able to give his initial reflections on the way that game developed and the slow start once again for his group.
"Offensively, we've got to get seven. We were shooting ourselves in the foot at times, and being put in some 3rd-and-long situations," said McDermott after the loss. "Just overall... when it comes down to it, you know we've got to close the game out. Also, just better overall tackling fundamentally and defensively. We have to do a better job there, and that starts with me."
The Patriots took advantage of early opportunities the Bills presented them with, especially on the first offensive drive for the Bills with Josh Allen's first pass thrown was intercepted by Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers.
"We talk about being more detailed, getting into a rhythm early, playing complimentary football with all three phases working together. We have not gotten into a good rhythm, obviously, in the first quarter, lets start there. So just overall, we have got to find the answers there," McDermott said.
The Bills next return home for a short week to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park.
