Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR 550) - After proving to be a serviceable backup option at running back near the tail end of the 2023 season, the Buffalo Bills are bringing back Ty Johnson in 2024.
The Bills announced the signing of Johnson on Tuesday after ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler originally reported the signing last week.
Johnson was signed last season as a late addition near the end of the preseason. He was eventually signed to the Bills' practice squad, where he spent about half the season before being signed to the active roster in October.
In 10 games played with the Bills in 2023, Johnson was able to rush for 132 yards on 30 carries, while also accounting for 62 yards in the air on seven receptions and a touchdown.
By the end of the regular season and into the playoffs, Johnson had overtaken veteran Latavius Murray as the Bills' No. 2 running back behind James Cook.
In 72 career games in the league with the Bills, Detroit Lions and New York Jets, the 26-year-old has rushed for 1,057 yards on 238 carries and four touchdowns. He has also added 730 yards through the air on 93 catches and another four scores.
Johnson is one of just three running backs now under contract for the 2024 season, joining Cook and Darrynton Evans.
