Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR 550) - In an announcement that comes as little surprise to many, Buffalo Bills linebacker Terrel Bernard has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week following his Week 3 performance against the Washington Commanders.
Bernard was all over the field for the Bills in their 37-3 win over the Commanders. The 24-year-old racked up a team-high seven total tackles, two tackles for a loss, two sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery in the victory.
The second-year linebacker out of Baylor University becomes the first Bills player and first NFL player since 2007 to record two-plus sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery in a single game.
Through three starts this season, Bernard already has 24 combined tackles, two tackles for loss, two quarterback hits, two interceptions and his fumble recovery. His other interception came in Week 2 in a win over the Las Vegas Raiders at Highmark Stadium.
This is the first time Bernard has been honored as the AFC Defensive Player of the Week in his career, and is the first Bills defensive player to earn the honor since defensive tackle Ed Oliver last season in a Week 12 win over the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving.
Bernard is the second Bills player this season to earn AFC Player of the Week honors, joining quarterback Josh Allen, who was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week this past week against the Raiders.
The 2-1 Bills will next take on the 3-0 Miami Dolphins this upcoming Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET in Orchard Park.
