The Buffalo Sabres made one of the biggest trades in franchise history on Thursday, dealing center Jack Eichel to the Vegas Golden Knights in a significant six-piece deal.

However, that wasn't the only trade the Sabres made on Thursday.

The team announced later in the afternoon the acquisition of defenseman Johnny Boychuk from the New York Islanders in exchange for future considerations

The trade was more of a salary cap maneuver for both sides, as New York dealt the rights to Boychuk to Buffalo. Boychuk, who unofficially retired last year and had been on long term injured reserve due to an eye injury, has a contract that expires after this season, and frees up $6 million in cap space for the Islanders.

Meanwhile, the move for the Sabres keeps the team above the cap floor to make up for the salary that was lost in dealing Eichel to the Golden Knights.

Boychuk called it a career last November after a skate cut to his left eyelid resulted in 90 stitches. He initially retuned from that injury and played in the postseason, but noticed that his vision had been affected.
