A train derailment in Scranton on Wednesday afternoon resulted in a significant diesel fuel leak, prompting an emergency response to the Stauffer Industrial Park. The Scranton Fire Department was dispatched to the railroad tracks behind the ID Logistics building just before 2 p.m. after reports of a locomotive and several cars leaving the tracks.

Upon arrival, crews discovered that the locomotive's fuel tank had bottomed out and ruptured, leaking approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel onto the surrounding ground. The train consisted of 10 cars in total, which were carrying a cargo of wine. While several cars were involved in the derailment, officials confirmed that the wine cargo remained undamaged.

Hazmat teams successfully contained the spill to a small area surrounding the locomotive, preventing the fuel from reaching nearby waterways or drainage systems. No injuries were reported in the incident. The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
