DETROIT (WWJ) - One driver is dead following an early morning crash that sent one vehicle careening into a home and damaged a gas line in Detroit.

WWJ's Charlie Langton reported live from the scene of a two-car crash on Moross near I-94 on the city's east side where the smell of gas permeated the air as police, fire and DTE crews responded to the area Thursday morning.

"I just received some very bad news from Detroit Police -- this now is a fatal accident," Langton reported just after 8 a.m.

Police told Langton that the two vehicles collided around 5:10 a.m. and the force of the crash sent one vehicle over the median, across the southbound lanes of Moross and plowed right into the home of James Randall.

"I have to say, I'm still shaking Charlie," Randall told Langton. "I mean, when you get up at 5:10 in the morning, you don't know what happened. You hear just a loud 'ka-boom!' If it would have hit anywhere but that corner, that car might have been in my basement."

Initially, police said the driver whose car crashed into the home was in critical condition, but later confirmed they had succumbed to their injuries.

The other driver involved was unhurt.

Focus now shifts to addressing a serious gas leak that occurred when the crash damaged a gas line in the area. In addition to a large police presence, Langton said multiple DTE Energy crews are present to safely address immediate repairs.

"Detroit Fire Department on the scene and the Detroit Police have a number of blocks just north of I-94 and Moross completely blocked off," Langton said. "Still a very dangerous situation."

The circumstances leading up the crash remain unclear at this time. An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
