DETROIT (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police say a man is dead after he rear-ended a semi-truck stopped in traffic on I-75.

The crash happened at around 1 p.m. Wednesday, according to MSP, along the southbound side of the freeway, near Mack Ave. in Midtown Detroit.

Police said a preliminary investigation found that the semi was stopped on the freeway due to "regular traffic congestion."

The driver of the car, police said, was not able to stop in time and hit the truck. He was taken by EMS to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The truck driver was not injured, and there were no other vehicles involved in the crash.

MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said, in a statement: “We continue to ask drivers to leave plenty of space between them and the vehicle in front of them. This will allow time to stop and prevent crashes like this one today.”

The freeway was closed near the crash scene, but has since reopened.

The name and age of the victim were not immediately released, while police notify his family.
