OCEANA COUNTY (WWJ) -- A 10-year-old boy is dead after his mother shot him in the head before she turned the gun on herself, according to a West Michigan sheriff.
WZZM reports that deputies responded to reports of gunfire after 6 p.m. Monday in the 2300 block of Baseline Road.
Upon their arrival, police found the young boy and the 38-year-old mother with gunshot wounds to their heads.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the son was rushed to a hospital, clinging to life. On Tuesday, tests were performed on the boy but doctors didn't find any brain activity, so he is considered deceased.
According to Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast, the mother's friend said the woman had been struggling with mental health issues and they went to the house to check on her. Mast says that as the friend entered, gunshots rang out.
