(WWJ) A 12-year-old girl from Allen Park was killed when a driver allegedly ran a red light at Telegraph and Northline roads in Taylor.

Police said the speeding driver who ran the light, identified as a 20-year-old Taylor man, slammed into a car with the child inside at about 12 a.m. Wednesday.

The girl, identified as Phoebe Elliot, died at the scene.

The car with the child was being driven by the child's 45-year-old aunt, according to police.

Both drivers involved were transported to the hospital, where the one considered at fault was placed under police guard.

WWJ's Charlie Langton reports that police do believe that alcohol or drugs may have been a factor in the crash, although the investigation is ongoing.

A search warrant was completed for a blood draw, and police are awaiting the results.

Police Chief John Blair said this "very tragic" incident is a reminder that drivers should "keep their head on a swivel" when going through intersections.

The suspect was known to police, Blair said. At the time of the crash he was free on bond after being charged with felonious assault in a separate case.

The young man's name is being withheld at this time, pending an arraignment.
