DETROIT (WWJ) – A 13-year-old boy is facing charges after allegedly shooting a 14-year-old girl to death inside a Detroit apartment early Sunday morning.

The boy has been charged with manslaughter – aimed with intent but without malice – and one count of felony firearm in connection with the shooting.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office says it all unfolded shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday when the 14-year-old girl was inside an apartment with other teens in the 100 block of Riverfront Drive, near the former Joe Louis Arena.

The teens were allegedly passing around a handgun inside the apartment when the 13-year-old boy allegedly pointed it at the girl and fired it, before fleeing the scene.

When officers arrived, they found the girl inside with gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released.

Authorities said Sunday multiple teens were inside at the time of the incident, but it was not clear how many.

Police officials on Sunday had said the shooting was believed to be an accident.

A preliminary hearing was held Monday afternoon at the Lincoln Hall of Justice. The 13-year-old, whose name was not released, was given a $10,000 cash/surety bond. His next court date is set for Aug. 9.
