DETROIT (WWJ) -- A 12-year-old Detroit boy is in the hospital after being shot by his 14-year-old brother, who is now facing charges.
Detroit police say the two boys were pushing a go-kart down the street in the area of Fairmount and Alcoy – near East State Fair and Schoenherr on the northeast side – around 2:30 p.m. when the shooting happened.
The teen was charged Monday with one count of carrying a concealed weapon and one count of careless discharge of a firearm causing injury.
The boys said when they saw a dog, the older brother grabbed a gun from under the seat of the go-kart and the gun apparently went off accidentally while he was pulling it out, police said Sunday.
The bullet ended up hitting the younger boy in the lower leg, officials said.
Police said the younger boy was hospitalized and in stable condition on Sunday. His condition late Monday afternoon was not clear.
The gun was later recovered from behind a garage in the area. Police also noted that they didn't see any dogs.
The teen’s preliminary hearing was held Monday afternoon at the Lincoln Hall of Justice and he was given a $7,500/10% bond, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. He was placed on house arrest until his next hearing, which is scheduled for July 25.
