WARREN (WWJ) - A middle school student is in custody Wednesday afternoon after officials say the juvenile made online school shooting threats against three schools in Warren.
Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer told WWJ reporter Charlie Langton that detectives traced the IP address to the 13-year-old student who was then arrested after three schools -- Cousino High School, Carter Middle School and Community High School -- were shut down over the threats on Wednesday.
Langton said the juvenile -- who is a student at Carter Middel School -- could face charges for domestic terrorism, which is a 20 year felony.
Dwyer told WWJ that around 12:25 a.m., his department became aware of alarming school shooting comments that a user made on Twitter.
The school district said they are working with law enforcement in their investigation and quickly closed the schools. Dwyer said earlier his team of detectives were on the case, who then traced the messages.
Langton reported from outside the Warren Police Department where he was able to talk to the suspect's mother.
"I did get a chance to talk to mom, wouldn't go on camera, but she said the kid is a good kid, didn't do it and they'll challenge this," he said.
The latest threat comes days after the Oxford School District in Oakland County said a potential threat sent over social media prompted an investigation on Monday.
District authorities said in a community letter to parents, students and staff that a Snapchat message saying "come bring a gun to Oxford school," was sent by a user who has not yet been identified by police.
Superintendent Ken Weaver, said classes are expected to continue as normal this week with additional police presence if available in all the schools across the district.
Oxford High School was thrust into the national spotlight last November after Ethan Crumbley, 15, allegedly open fired on staff and students, killing four classmates; six students and a teacher were also wounded.
The Warren Police Department is investigating the situation -- no other information has been released.
The department said they are still accepting tips about the case; the department may be reached at 1-586-574-4700.
