OXFORD (WWJ) - Officials for the Oxford School District said a potential threat sent over social media is under investigation after a school resource officer became aware of it Monday morning.

District authorities said in a community letter to parents, students and staff that a Snapchat message saying "come bring a gun to Oxford school," was sent by a user who has not yet been identified by police. According to Superintendent Ken Weaver, they do not believe the person who sent the message and those who received it are students at Oxford Schools.

The superintendent added that police were unable to track down those behind the message, but the investigation is ongoing.

"...Due to the unique nature of social media, the source of the message might never be determined. We are limited in what we can share, but will update families with any additional information should it become available," Weaver said in a prepared statement.

Classes are expected to continue as normal this week with additional police presence if available in all the schools across the district, Weaver said, but families "are encouraged to make plans... according to what is best for your student and family on whether to attend school."

"As a reminder, we have armed security at every school building and stringent visitor protocols. Central office administrators will be stationed at each building during morning drop offs as well,"

The superintendent praised the student to came forward and reported the message — he encouraged all students to continue to report suspicious or concerning information to the OK2SAY reporting tool, whether through the app or the website.

"Thank you to the Wildcat who reported this message to a trusted adult. If you or your child have other information regarding this Snapchat conversation, please contact the Oakland County Sheriff's Office as soon as possible.

Oxford High School was thrust into the national spotlight last November after Ethan Crumbley, 15, allegedly open fired on staff and students, killing four classmates; six students and a teacher were also wounded.

In the aftermath, schools around Michigan saw an influx of "copycat" threats, leading to the arrest of dozens of students.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said to WWJ back in December that “there could be severe consequences” for those who make threats, even if they don’t intend to carry them out or they don’t get charged with a crime.
