DETROIT (WWJ) - A 17-year-old from Hamtramck is facing murder changes for allegedly stabbing a man to death near Belle Isle Nature Center last Friday.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said the teen was adult designated, but charged as a juvenile with one count of First-Degree Murder for the fatal stabbing of Ali Mahyoub-Ali Mohammed, 56, also of Hamtramck, on Aug. 12.
The adult designation allows the judge to sentence the teen as an adult if convicted. Worthy's office explained.
The prosecutors office said the teen and the victim were in a wooded area near the Belle Isle Nature Center on August 12 around 4:30 p.m. when the juvenile drew a knife and stabbed the victim.
Worthy's office alleged the teen struck the 56-year-old several times, fatally wounding him, before fleeing the area.
The 17-year-old surrendered himself to the Hamtramck Police Department later that day.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Juvenile Detention Facility before Referee Leslie Graves.
