DETROIT (WWJ) -- Two Detroit men have been charged with first-degree murder in the killing of a toddler.
On Tuesday, prosecutor Kym Worthy charged 19-year-old Darius Lanier and 21-year-old Eugene Hubbard in connection with the fatal shooting of 2-year-old Brison Christian, and the non-fatal shooting of his 9-year-old brother BJ.
The tragic incident happened on June 17 just past 9:30 p.m., when the children and their mother were being driven from BJ’s basketball practice on I-75 and McNichols by their father.
The father then heard multiple gunshots and his car began to malfunction. He then pulled over, and it was at that point that he and his wife realized the car had been hit by gunfire, and their sons had been shot.
When Michigan State Police arrived at the scene, they found that Brison had sustained a gunshot wound to the head, and BJ had been shot in his left arm.
Medics then transported both children to a local hospital for treatment, where Brison was pronounced dead. BJ was treated and released, and he is expected to recover.
An investigation from MSP alleges that two suspects mistakenly identified the Christian’s black truck, and the Dearborn family were innocent victims.
Lanier and Hubbard have been charged with one count of First-Degree Murder, three counts of Assault with Intent to Murder, one count of Discharge from a Vehicle Causing Death, one count of Discharge from a Vehicle Causing Injury, two counts of Discharge from a Vehicle, and eight counts of Felony Firearm.
No further details are being released at this time as the case remains under investigation.
