COMMERCE TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Fire officials in Northwest Oakland County said a housefire on Thursday morning not only proved difficult to put out, but also caused the deaths of three dogs while the owner was away.
WWJ Newsradio 950 reporter Mike Campbell was at the scene on Four Oaks Lane in Commerce around 9 a.m. as fighter fighters from Commerce Township and Walled Lake worked to control the flames.
Commerce Township Fire Marshall Mark Gall told WWJ's Mike Campbell that the dwelling off Carey Road and Commerce Road was in such a rural area that there were no fire hydrants around it; a water tanker was brought in and fire crews stretched and connected about a 1,000 ft. of hose to bring water to the fire.
Gall said once they got water flowing, fire fighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames.
"It started in the kitchen area of their house. Unfortunately that homeowner wasn't home at the time of the fire, so it had a little bit of head start on us," Commerce Township Fire Chief Jim Dundas said to WWJ's Mike Campbell.
"First call we got was from a neighbor who saw fire coming from the house. Our guys were pretty aggressive about getting in here and getting the fire out."
While no human injuries were reported, Dundas said the homeowner's pets were inside the home at the time.
The three dogs died in the fire.
Dundas said while the inside of the house is completely gutted, the structure remains standing and can be rebuilt.
The cause of the fire was not released at this time.
