3 teens hospitalized, several in custody following shooting at youth football game in Detroit

DETROT (WWJ) -- Three teenagers are hospitalized and several people are in police custody following a shooting at a youth football game in Detroit.

Investigators say it happened on Sunday night around 6 p.m. in the area of Boston and Martindale, in the city’s historic Boston-Edison neighborhood.

Hundreds of people were attending the game when shots were fired between two groups, authorities said.

Bullets hit a 14-year-old and two 15-year-olds.  All three teens are reportedly in stable condition.

A total of six people -- two adults and four minors -- were taken into custody in connection with the shooting, but authorities have not released any names of anyone involved. Two guns were also recovered at the scene.

Interim Detroit Police Chief James White said Monday afternoon the incident appears to stem from an argument on the internet.

“This appears to be a situation where this dispute is emanating from a social media conflict, an argument on social media that they decided to resolve with gunfire,” White said

The investigation is ongoing as detectives search for a brown Jeep Grand Cherokee with license plate EZK8554 that was seen speeding away from the area.

“Playing a football game on a summer afternoon in our city, and people outside that event make a decision to resolve whatever dispute they’re having with gunfire,” White said, noting it’s “the same story” as many gun-related crimes in the city.

Anyone who has any information about the vehicle is being urged to contact Detroit police.
