DETROIT (WWJ) – Detroit police are investigating after a shootout erupted in the middle of a neighborhood on the city’s east side late Monday afternoon, leaving three teens and an adult hospitalized.
Detroit Police Chief James White says there were at least 30 shots fired and roughly 20 people involved, mostly teenagers.
It all unfolded around 4:45 p.m. when two groups of people got into a fight in the 12600 block of McCoy Circle, near Warren Avenue and Conner Street, according to White.
As the scuffle escalated, Detroit police received multiple 911 calls. But before officers could arrive, shots rang out.
White says three teens, ages 15, 16 and 18, as well as a 29-year-old, were all taken to the hospital. Two of them were said to be in temporary serious condition, while the other two were stable.
Authorities are not exactly sure what prompted the fight and shooting, and White said gang intel and other officers were in the area investigating Monday evening to determine whether there was a gang nexus.
With more than 30 shell casings and two weapons recovered at the scene, White says “it could’ve been a lot worse, but it was already bad enough.”
Speaking during a press briefing near the scene, White said police are looking for multiple shooters and a female who was somehow involved in the incident, either as a witness or a fighter herself.
The chief said investigators were knocking on doors in the area to make sure no one else was injured by a stray bullet, as well as trying to gather more information about the shootout.
