SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) -- Police are releasing new information about a fatal crash along M-53, the Van Dyke Freeway, in Shelby Township.
Officials said a 47-year-old woman from Almont in Lapeer County was driving in the northbound lanes of M-53, north of 21 Mile Rd., just after 12 p.m. on Monday when her car went off the freeway and into a wooded area.
She was pronounced dead at the scene after her Ford Expedition crashed head-on into a tree.
Police did not release the woman's name, but said her family has been notified.
No other vehicles were involved in the incident, police said, and no one else was injured.
It's not clear what may have caused the woman to crash as the investigation continues, although police said it may have been a medical emergency.
Earlier in the day, M-53 was closed from Hall Rd. to 23 Mile Rd. with police on the scene, but all lanes have since reopened to traffic.
