BERLIN TWP. (WWJ) – Several teenagers are recovering at the hospital after a drunk driving crash in St. Clair County over the weekend.

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office says the teens had been drinking at a local bar on Friday night near Berlin Township, after using fake IDs to get in.

The teens left the bar in the early morning hours Saturday in two pickup trucks driven by an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old, according to the sheriff’s office. One of the trucks tried to pass the other on Capac Road, but the trucks collided, sending both off the road and rolling multiple times.

Of the six teens involved in the crash, three were ejected, according to the sheriff’s office. Five teens were taken to McLaren Lapeer Hospital.

One teen was found unconscious when first responders arrived. He was ultimately taken to Beaumont Royal Oak, where he remained on a ventilator on Monday.

Another teen was found pinned under a truck, but only sustained minor injuries.

The sheriff’s office says the drivers were both found to be intoxicated. While authorities believe they had been drinking at a bar, the sheriff’s office did not release the name of the establishment.

The sheriff’s office has notified the Michigan Liquor Control Commission.

The driver of the truck that caused the crash was charged with third-degree operating while intoxicated causing serious injury. The other driver was charged with OWI.

The sheriff’s office says the crash came just one day after launching their “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.
