5-year-old child killed in hit-and-run crash, Warren police arrest suspect

WARREN (WWJ) -- A 5-year-old child has died following a hit-and-run last night in Warren.

The tragic incident happened just before 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday in the area of Van Dyke Avenue and Stephens.

The boy, who was with his family, was crossing the road on a bicycle when he was struck by a driver in a Jeep.

He was then rushed to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Following the crash, the driver fled northbound on Van Dyke. Police discovered the vehicle in a Taco Bell parking lot and located the 22-year-old driver at a nearby gas station, where he was taken into custody.

According to police, the suspect told them he was late to work and was speeding. That’s when he drove through a red light and hit the boy.

The driver is now facing charges, and the situation is under investigation by Warren Police.
