DETROIT (WWJ) -- A 9-month old is safe this afternoon following an earlier incident in which a man stole a woman's car with the child still inside.

At 9 a.m. Friday morning, Detroit police received a call about a carjacking and kidnapping near Seven Mile and Crusade St., just east of Hayes St.

After further investigation, officers discovered the situation was more complex than originally reported.

A woman was dropping off a male acquaintance at work when the pair had an argument. As the confrontation escalated, the man took the car and drove off.

While the woman was able to get her older child out of the vehicle, the 9-month-old baby was still inside.

Law enforcement searched the area, located the stolen car, and later reported that the child was safe.

Detroit Police Chief James White provided an update via Facebook Live, saying investigators believe the mother is in a relationship with the male acquaintance, but they are unsure if he is the baby's father.

Detectives are also working to determine whether or not charges need to be filed.
