DETROIT (WWJ) - Neighbors said a bloody confrontation in their Detroit neighborhood occurred Tuesday evening after a man accused of sexually assaulting a teen girl was beaten by the victim's angry family members.
Although the Detroit Police Department did not confirm the fight, witnesses say they heard a commotion outside their homes in northwest Detroit and saw the suspect almost naked and surrounded by the victim's relatives.
"They beat him over there real good," neighbor Carmen Witherspoon told FOX 2. "He was on the ground. He managed to get up and he ran across the street, and he was on my property. He fell, he slipped, and fell. And that’s when they beat him some more."
The family reportedly confronted the suspect after he allegedly sexually assaulted the teen and severely beat him after chasing him around the neighborhood.
Another witness said the man was bloody and the beating had left a puddle of blood on ground. A video of the incident was recorded.
As reported by FOX 2, Capt. Rebecca McKay with the Detroit police called the situation "tragic" and said the man was taken into custody.
"It is in affecting a young life, a family, and it’s going to definitely take time to heal," McKay said of the incident.
Detroit police is putting together a warrant package for review by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for potential charges in the case.
McKay reiterated that sexual assault is a "real thing" and urged people to remain diligent and report anything they find suspicious.
""It occurs at all ages. I would just ask the parents, teachers, advisers, administrators, friends, and family just always keep your eyes open," McKay said. "Listen if you see something - say something. Obviously, report any suspected abuse to the Detroit Police Department.'
According to FOX 2, the suspect is known to the police, stating there was a warrant out for his arrest at the time of the alleged beating for a non-fatal shooting on Detroit's east side.
