WAYNE COUNTY (WWJ) — Troopers say an impaired driver suffered a broken ankle, lacerations to his face, bruised ribs and lungs after crashing his vehicle on I-96 in Detroit on Tuesday morning.
Michigan State Police were first dispatched to the scene of the crash around 6 a.m. on westbound I-96 and Grand River Ave. The driver and his passenger were traveling in a Dodge Caliber before it collided into a wall; no other vehicles were involved.
According to investigators, the passenger fled the scene, leaving the driver with serious injuries as a result of the crash.
Police said the driver, a 40-year-old male from Detroit, was "obviously impaired" and was taken by EMS to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
The driver's injuries were listed as serious and he was admitted into the hospital for treatment. Police secured a search warrant to draw blood from the driver; those lab results are pending.
No information on the passenger was released; an investigation into the crash is ongoing.
