OAKLAND COUNTY (WWJ) -- In an effort to encourage drivers to practice safe habits behind the wheel, Oakland County is recognizing April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
The Oakland County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of this declaration on Tuesday, March 22.
The Board said this will hopefully help others acknowledge the life-threatening impacts of distracted driving, and encourage all drivers to practice safe driving.
Commissioner Eileen T. Kowall introduced the idea, saying that the impacts of distracted driving "isn’t only about how you are impacted, but how your decision impacts other drivers, pedestrians or road workers.”
The Board also says they hope to educate residents about the importance of remaining alert while operating a vehicle.

According to a study conducted by AAA, over 44% of drivers reported that they had read a text or email while driving.
Furthermore, the National Safety Council said that in 2018, more than 2,800 people in the U.S. died in distraction-related crashes. At least seven people died every day, with an estimated 400,000 injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers annually.
