STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) -- A 21-year-old woman has been killed after a crash with a suspected drunk driver on M-53 in Macomb County Thursday morning.

Sterling Heights Police Lieutenant Mario Bastianelli said a woman from Dayton, Ohio was traveling northbound on M-53 near Clinton River Road at about 1:15 a.m. when the crash occurred.

According to officials, the at-fault driver, a 45-year-old man from East China Township, lost control of his BMW and ended up striking her Nissan.

The man crashed head-on into the start of a guard rail and the woman's car roof was cut off when it went under a road sign.

Bastianelli told WWJ's Mike Campbell that both vehicles then went off the road and downhill towards Henry Ford II High School, where one car ended up on the football field.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the man is hospitalized.

Authorities suspect drunk driving was involved.

Northbound M-53 at 18 Mile Road has been closed for several hours now.
