DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit police have peacefully resolved a barricaded gunman situation on the city's west side that began at 8 p.m. Tuesday night.

At about 7:50 p.m., officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at a home in the 11700 block of Plainview, on Evergreen Road, south of I-96.

According to Sergeant Enrique Jackson, a man in his thirties had allegedly fired shots at his girlfriend.

She was not hit and was able to escape uninjured.

Officers arrived and attempted to take the suspect into custody. When the man came out onto the porch, police deployed tasers twice. The tasers were not effective, and the man retreated inside.

SWAT and a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) were sent out.

Around 10 p.m., law enforcement issued a shelter-in-place warning to nearby residents and told travelers to avoid the area.

WWJ's Charlie Langton was on the scene Monday morning as SWAT and CIT continued to negotiate with the man, who was still barricaded in the home.

Throughout the barricade situation, the man was alone inside the house. He had not fired any more shots since the initial incident.

According to Langton, the suspect's parents were also onsite, hoping to help end the situation peacefully.

Just after 7 a.m., Langton reported seeing increased activity in front of the house. By 7:20 a.m., the suspect had surrendered and was taken into custody.

The gunman has a criminal record and faced charges as recently as last year.

A police investigation into the incident is ongoing.
