DETROIT (WWJ) – Detroit police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officials are continuing to investigate after a body was discovered buried in the back of a home on Detroit's east side on Wednesday afternoon.
WWJ's Charlie Langton reported live from the unoccupied home in the 8000 block of Hildale Street, near 7 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue, where a DTE contractor working in the area noticed something strange poking out of the dirt.
"Apparently, the DTE worker saw a hand sticking out of the ground right in the back of this house." Langton said. Detroit police arrived on scene where they confirmed officers found human remains.
The FBI was called in to assist detectives with identifying the body, Langton said, but the victim's gender and circumstances surrounding their death have not been released.
"I can tell you here from being at the scene, there are a lot of abandoned homes," Langton said. "In fact, this body was found behind a home that was abandoned — the owners of the home or the people nearby were not there at the time of this discovery."
Langton described the street early Thursday morning as "eerie" with residents and neighbors in the area unwilling to talk about what happened at the home.
"There have been reports of missing persons in the area — again, we're on the northeast side of Detroit — but there's been no tie yet," Langton added. "And that's what the investigators are doing this morning, trying to figure out exactly how this body was buried in the shallow grave."
FBI officials are continuing to assist the Detroit Police Department's homicide unit. No other information about the case has been released.
