GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ) – An investigation is underway in West Michigan after a driver was killed when their car went off the highway and became entangled in a chain-link fence.
Michigan State Police troopers from the Grand Rapids Post were called to the scene on US-131 near Franklin around 11 p.m. Friday.
Authorities say the driver, a 51-year-old Grandville man, was headed north on 131 when he lost control of his car and went off the road to the right.
His car rolled several times into a chain-link fence, which became wrapped around the car.
MSP officials say the man was ejected from the car during the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene, despite lifesaving attempts by EMS and fire personnel.
A passenger was treated at the hospital for minor injuries.
Police said Saturday while the crash remains under investigation, alcohol may have played a role in the crash.
MSP officials are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Grand Rapids Post at 616-866-4411.
